A Jyotirlinga is a shrine where Shiva, a god in Hinduism is worshipped in the form of a Jyotirlingam or “Lingam of light.” There are twelve traditional Jyotirlinga shrines in India.

It is believed that Shiva first manifested himself as a Jyotirlinga. It is among the most sacred Hindu temples.

The Somnath Temple is:

1.On the western coast of Gujarat, India, is one of the twelve Jyotirlinga shrines of Shiva. Somnath means “The Protector of the Moon God”.

2.The Somnath Temple is known as “the Shrine Eternal”, having been destroyed six times and rebuilt six times.

3.Most recently it was rebuilt in November 1947.

Muslim Custom of Destroying Hindu Temples

We have that:

1.They have destroyed thousands of Hindu temples.

2.And killed hundreds of thousands of Hindu civilians, for example the Muslim Tamerlane(1336-1405), descendent of Genghis Khan, in his Memoirs says he ordered 100,000 Hindu civilians who had been captured after the taking of Delhi to be slaughtered only for being “infidels.”

3.And that in 1850 there were 6 million slaves in India, most of them owned by Muslims.

Comparison with Europe

100,000 Hindus killed in 1 day or so in the name of Islam, only one of several massacres of non-Muslims by Muslims in the name of Islam, like in Fez, Morocco(6,000 Jews killed in 1033) and 5,000 Jews killed in Granada in 1066.And in 1 day he killed about 70% as many as Europeans have done in 800 years in the name of Christianity. And when you compare with Europe:

1.In 300 years the Medieval Inquisition killed 2,000 in the name of Christianity.

2.In hundreds of years the Spanish Inquisition killed 4,000(but Henry Kamen, the greatest expert on it says it was 2,000) and the Portuguese Inquisition killed some 1,200.

3.About 5,000-10,000 Protestants were killed by Catholics in 1572 in France(St.Bartholomew’s Massacre).

4.From 1450-1750 or in 300 years 50,000 people were killed as witches and wizards(75% woman and 25% men).

5.In 1099 some 20,000 Muslims and Jews were killed in Jerusalem by the Crusaders.

6.In 1391 about 50,000 Jews killed in Spain.

7.In 1095 about 5,000 Jews were killed in Germany.

8.About 20,000 Cathars killed in the Albigensian Crusade in France in the 13th century.

9.Charlemagne in 782 killed 4,500 Saxons who refused to convert to Christianity.

And Muslims have killed even more in the Name of Islam in the 20th Century

1.Khomeini in 10 years (1979-1989) killed 100,000 in the name of the Islamic revolution and Islam

2.The FIS in Algeria killed about 100,000 in 10 years

3.Ben Laden killed 130,000 in 10 years in the name of Islam.

4.In 5 years since 2006 5,000 Buddhists have been killed in the name of Islam by Muslims in Thailand.

History of Destruction of the Somnath Temple

The first temple of Somnath is said to have existed before 1 AD.

The second temple, built by the Yadava kings in Gujarat, replaced the first one on the same site around 649.

First Destruction by Muslims

In 725 Junayad, the Muslim governor of Sind, sent his armies to destroy the second temple.

The Gurjara Pratihara king Nagabhata II constructed the third temple in 815, a large structure of red sandstone.

Second Destruction

In 1024 the temple was once again destroyed by Mahmud of Ghazni who raided the temple.

The temple was rebuilt by the Gujjar Paramara King Bhoj of Malwa and the Solanki king Bhima of Gujarat or Patan between 1026 and 1042. The wooden structure was replaced by Kumarpal (r.1143-72), who built the temple of stone.

Third Destruction

In 1296 the temple was once again destroyed by Sultan Allauddin Khilji’s army. According to Taj-ul-Ma’sir of Hasan Nizami, Raja Karan of Gujarat was defeated and forced to flee, “fifty thousand infidels were dispatched to hell by the sword” and “more than twenty thousand slaves, and cattle beyond all calculation fell into the hands of the victors”.

The temple was rebuilt by Mahipala Deva, the Chudasama king of Saurashtra in 1308.

Fourth Destruction

In 1375 the temple was once again destroyed by Muzaffar Shah I, the Sultan of Gujarat.

Fifth Destruction

In 1451 the temple was once again destroyed by Mahmud Begda, the Sultan of Gujarat.

Sixth Destruction

In 1701 the temple was once again destroyed by Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. Aurangzeb built a mosque on the site of the Somnath temple, using some columns from the temple, whose Hindu sculptural motifs remained visible.

Queen Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore rebuilt the temple in 1783 at a site adjacent to the ruined temple which was already converted to a mosque.
