In Hinduism there are 330 million gods but probably the most popular is Krishna.He has the following characteristics:
1.His skin is blue.Krishna in Sanskrit means “dark blue”.
2.Some say that Krishna wrote the Mahabharata, one of the sacred books of Hinduism.
3.Krishna is the 8th avatar or incarnation of the the Hindu god Vishnu.
4.He was born in the Indian city of Mathura.
5.As a young man he worked taking care of cows,many Indian illustrations show him with cows.
What is the Mahabharata?
1.The Mahabharata is one of the two major Sanskrit epics of ancient India, the other being the Ramayana/”The Journey of Rama”. The Mahabharata is the longest Sanskrit epic. About 1.8 million words in total, the Mahabharata is ten times the length of the Iliad, four times the length of the Ramayana. It is a very sacred book, it is the Bible or the Koran of Hinduism.
2.It tells the story of the Kurukshetra War, a war between two groups of relatives, the Kauravas and the Pandavas. They are cousins and fight over the Indo-Aryan kingdom called Kuru. The location of the battle was Kurukshetra in the modern state of Haryana in India. The battle lasts 18 days and the Pandavas win, the good guys. The Mahabharata ends with the death of Krishna and ascent of the Pandava brothers to heaven.
3.Inside the book is the story of the Bhagavad Gita,which is the most famous and beloved event of the poem.
4.Traditionally, the authorship of the Mahabharata is attributed to Vyasa.
5.It is thought the story is probably based on a real war that happened in the 8th or 9th century before Jesus.
Who are the Aryans?
They were a group of white people who conquered northern India around 1,500 years BC. They were from Central Asia and imposed their language Sanskrit on northern India. The native languages of India are Dravidian, like Tamil. From Sanskrit, which is related to Iranian, English, Greek, Latin, Russian and other Indo-European languages, come Hindi-Urdu, Bengali, Punjabi, etc.
What is the Bhagavad-Gita?
1.It is an event in the Mahabharata where Krishna is disguised as a charioteer of Arjuna, the leader of the Pandavas.
2.Arjuna goes to battle and sees that the enemies are his family, his grandfather, his cousins and loved ones and decides not to fight but Krishna tells him he must do his duty and fight, it is the correct thing.
The Temple of Krishna,in the City of his Birth,was destroyed by the Muslims
As you can see Krishna is very beloved, very popular among Hindus, a real hero and his bith place is Mathura. There it had the Temple of Krishna, which was destroyed in 1018 by the Muslim king Mahmud of Ghazni (971-1030).Mahmud also destroyed the Temple of Somnath, dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva, one of the most holy in Hinduism, in 1025.
Mahmud estimated that the Temple of Krishna had taken 200 years to build. It was astonishingly beautiful and had 5 statues of gold with jewels as eyes, and they were 5 feet in height. Mahmud ordered the it to be utterly destroyed.
Who was Mahmud of Ghazni(971-1030)?
1.He was the sultan of a vast region, with its capital in Samarkand.
2.He made 17 pillaging raids on India between 1000 and 1026, destroying many Hindu temples, robbing a lot of treasure.
3.According to Abu Nasr Muhammad Utbi, the secretary and chronicler of Mahmud, he at one time took 500,000 Hindus as slaves, men and women, back with him.
4.The Muslims destroyed about 2.000 temples in India throughout history.
The Three Objectives of Mahmoud of Ghazni
1.To enslave Hindus or kill them.
2.To obtain alot of money from the rich Hindu temples.
3.To destroy Hindu temples,if possible.
